The Morgan 22 was designed by Morgan Yachts in 1968 at
St. Petersburg, Florida. Morgan
Yachts was later bought out by and is currently owned by Catalina Yachts.
Designed by Charles Morgan, she is the smallest Morgan they manufactured.
In consideration of today’s manufacturing methods, this craft is quite
heavy. From the shrouds to the mast
diameter to the number and thickness of the fiberglass lay-ups, she is all but
light. However, with heavy construction comes increased durability and higher
performance in heavy wind weather. She
is a sloop design and the standard rigging came with a fore and backstay.
She came with a vang and topping lift.
Her mast is at 30’ 2” above DWL.
The total sail area was approximately 238 square feet.
For her size she has a slightly wider beam than most at 8’. Her ballast weighs in at 1400 lbs. With a total weight at around 3,500 lbs her draft is 1’
10” and she uses a centerboard. Unusually,
the centerboard is very light and most of the ballast weight is in the keel of
the boat.
